Geological Guide to Bearreraig Bay, Skye

(Wadhurst Clay at top of cliff with Ashdown Formation, sandstone below)
(Bearreraig Bay) - 2005

In the above image the Jurassic layers can almost be seen dipping off to the north. The flat layer of vertical columns of rock (similar to the giants causeway of Ireland) can be seen above the Jurassic layer all along the coast. This layer is known as kilt rock, because it resembles a kilt… apparently. The layer is an intrusion of lava that happened when skye was volcanically active. The layer was previously a layer of soft Jurassic shale, but sadly was replaced with the kilt rock.

The signs to the bottom right of this photo show information about the Jurassic rocks in the bay according to these boards the age of the rocks is 170 million years old.
